Mykolaiv lacks more than two thousand shelters, and the problem is most acute in the Lisky, Namyv and Pivdennyi neighbourhoods. It is there that the city authorities plan to install mobile shelters, as there are virtually no stationary shelters in these areas.
Roman Vozniak, Head of the Department for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection of the Mykolaiv City Council, said this during the broadcast .
According to him, the city's fund of protective structures currently comprises 458 shelters:
- 222 shelters,
- 216 simple shelters,
- 20 mobile shelters.
Since the beginning of the year, the city council has taken over 63 more simple shelters, mostly in schools and kindergartens. However, their condition is far from ideal.
«These are mostly shelters in educational institutions. I cannot say that these shelters are in good condition. But most of the shelters used by our citizens today are gradually being put in order. They are undergoing routine repairs, major overhauls, and ventilation systems are being repaired. However, this network of shelters still does not meet the required number. According to a preliminary analysis, Mykolaiv needs more than 2,000 additional shelters», explained Roman Vozniak.
According to him, it is unrealistic to build such a number of stationary shelters in a short time because of the huge cost. In addition, some districts, such as Lisky, Namyv and Pivdennyi, have historically been built without basements, so it is technically impossible to equip the simplest shelters there.
That is why the city is waiting for the government's decision to co-finance the installation of mobile shelters in these neighbourhoods to provide protection for people.
«However, under the programme of Mykolaiv City Council, we are waiting for the government's decision to consider co-financing the installation of mobile shelters in the neighbourhoods of Lisky, Namyv and Pivdennyi. These neighbourhoods were built without using a specific methodology to provide a network of the simplest shelters», said Roman Vozniak.
In July of this year, Roman Vozniak said that Mykolaiv lacks two thousand shelters to protect the entire city's population.
He said this after the situation when Mykolaiv residents were unable to get into departmental shelters after hours during the shelling. The editors of NikVesti were contacted by city residents who were unable to get into the shelter at 173 Tsentralnyi Avenue during the alarm. All other shelters nearby also belong to institutions or enterprises that are on the balance sheet of municipal or private institutions and accept people only during working hours. Mykolaiv City Hall promises to discuss the issue of shelter availability at a meeting of the executive committee.
It should be noted that Mykolaiv region is among the five regions that showed the best performance in 2024 in terms of building and making shelters ready.
Recently, it became known that partner countries announced their new contributions to the construction of shelters in Ukraine in the amount of more than 22 million euros.
