Commemorative coin proposed to mark 50 years of Mykolaiv Shipbuilding Museum

Photo: NikVestiTo mark the 50th anniversary of the Mykolaiv Museum of Shipbuilding and the Navy, which will be celebrated in two years’ time on 30 July 2028, a proposal has been put forward to issue a commemorative coin by the National Bank of Ukraine.
This initiative was discussed during a meeting of the Mykolaiv Regional Council’s standing committee on science, education, culture, youth and sport, according to NikVesti.
The committee chair, councillor Yevhen Horburov, pointed out that the museum is unique in Ukraine and was once included in the list of the world’s 100 best museums.
«In two years’ time, the museum will celebrate its 50th anniversary. I attended its 45th-anniversary celebrations. I have proposed submitting an application to the National Bank to have a commemorative coin minted to mark the 50th anniversary of the Shipbuilding and Navy Museum. It is the only museum of its kind in our country,» he noted.
According to Horburov, in order to implement this initiative, a formal request must be submitted to the National Bank of Ukraine immediately, as the issue of commemorative coins is planned well in advance.
«We have already lost two years. It takes at least a year to be included in the National Bank’s programme, after which the coin is incorporated into the Mint’s plan. That is why we need to press ahead with this matter right now,» emphasised Yevhen Horburov.
As an example of the successful implementation of a similar initiative, he cited the Mykolaiv Astronomical Observatory, in honour of which a commemorative coin had previously been issued.
In the councillor's view, such a commemorative coin would not only highlight the museum’s significance for Ukraine but would also further raise the institution’s profile among visitors and collectors.
During the meeting, the museum’s management was advised to step up the preparation of documents and an application to the National Bank of Ukraine in order to ensure the initiative is included in the plan for the issue of commemorative coins.
It should be noted that in June, the National Bank of Ukraine put two new 10-hryvnia commemorative coins into circulation, dedicated to the Mykolaiv and Odesa regions.
