History

Launched in April 2009, NikVesti became one of the first regional online media in Ukraine. For more than a decade, we have been attracting attention to the pressing issues of local communities in the South of Ukraine, stimulating both the authorities and the community to act in favor of regional development.

For many years, the publication systematically and in detail covers the work of local self-government bodies and executive power in the Mykolaiv region, conducts full and comprehensive monitoring of all election processes, starting with the analysis of politicians' promises, their declarations, programs, and ending with public debates.

It was NikVesti during the local elections in 2022 that became the platform for the debates of Mykolaiv mayoral candidates on the evening talk show Battle for the City, which we organized in cooperation with local TV channels. Also, in 2020, it was NikVesti that organized an independent exit poll during the second round of Mykolaiv mayoral elections, which coincided with the official results with an error of ~1%.

Our content covers a wide range of topics, combining analytical material with operational news to offer readers a deep understanding and relevance of the news in their context.

The crisis caused by the war in 2022 put NikVesti on the verge of closure due to the complete shutdown of the advertising market in Ukraine and the lack of understanding of the future fate due to the danger of being occupied. In response to this challenge, during 2023-2024, we carried out a large-scale transformation, completely changed the editorial structure, constantly studied media management, increased the quality of content and distribution, which became an important element for the stable development of our online media. In fact, at the beginning of the war NikVesti was saved from closure by readers who sent us charitable contributions, as well as by international institutions and foundations that support independent journalism. We are proud to cooperate with our partners, which can be found on the Partners page.

Today, NikVesti is an independent local media that strives to work in the interests of the community and serve as a reliable source of information, working according to high journalistic standards.

In October 2024, NikVesti received a certificate of quality and transparency from the Reporters Without Borders project Journalism Trust Initiative. Also, NewsGuard, Microsoft's analytical tool for evaluating news credibility, rated the credibility and accuracy of our news content at 100/100 points.

Values

Our publication is guided by a simple but powerful slogan: «We make the dark — transparent, the closed — open, the hidden and unclear — accessible and clear.» We believe that true journalism should immerse itself in community issues and create opportunities for change. Our content aims not just to inform, but to encourage thoughtful research and analysis, providing readers with content that's not only fun to consume, but fun to learn.

  • Transparency and Accountability: Our work focuses on uncovering important regional issues, holding the government and community accountable. We carefully approach privacy issues, respect the presumption of innocence and avoid stereotyping. At the same time, we carefully analyze the actions of public figures, especially if they have social significance and affect the public.

  • Quality and depth of content: We bring together analytical material and operational news so that our readers have a deep understanding of the topics. This helps our audience not just consume news, but research and make sense of it.

  • Local responsibility and sensitivity to topics: We are sensitive to sensitive topics and understand the importance of every issue we raise. When we choose topics for publications, we try to do so with maximum objectivity and respect for the rights and freedoms of everyone, maintaining a balance between the interests of the community and the public interest.

  • Credibility and ethics: We base our materials on verified facts and authoritative sources. Each piece is carefully checked so that our readers can be sure of the truth and accuracy of the information they receive.

Our values are the foundation of NikVesti's trust, and they reflect our commitment to working for the community, revealing important and socially relevant topics for the development of society.

Team

NikVesti unites up to 20 specialists, where everyone has their own role in creating quality content and maintaining the stability of the publication. Half of the team are journalists, divided into two departments: Newsroom and Creative. This division allows one group to quickly inform readers about pressing events, and the other to work on exclusive articles, reports and analytical materials to deepen the understanding of key topics and issues of the region.

The other half of the team is involved in administrative support that helps the media stay sustainable. This part includes the financial manager, project manager, fundraiser, content distribution managers and technology specialists. Together, they ensure continuity of work, project management, financial stability, as well as adaptation of content to modern platforms and audiences.

Other activities

In addition to journalism, NikVesti is involved in filming documentary films:

  • Vykhidnyi (2018), directed by Zhanna Maksymenko-Dovhych, produced by Oksana Yanishevska.
This film is a portrait of the city of Mykolaiv, the people who live in it, a film about the search for identity against the background of a new reality. It was taken on May 9, when the townspeople came out to celebrate the national holiday. Old and new symbols side by side, the possibility or lack of understanding between people who, although they live on neighboring streets, are becoming further and further away from each other. Discussions, pro-Ukrainian and pro-Soviet struggles, red poppies and St. George's ribbons... The flagship of Russian imperial and then Soviet shipbuilding, the city, which was completely pro-Russian under the Soviet Union, suddenly showed its Ukrainian essence. Jumping from extreme to extreme, it is looking for its place on the modern map of Ukraine. The film won 1st place in the Dream city 2018 international short film competition, 2nd place in the DocuBaku 2018 short film competition, participated in the DocuDays 2018 competition program, Odessa International Film Festival 2018, goEast Film Festival in Germany, BEAST 2018 and Lisbon Film Preview 2019 in Portugal, WizzArt 2018 in Lviv, GogolFest 2018 in Mariupol.

  • Mykolaiv. Chronicles of protest (2018), directed by Zhanna Maksymenko-Dovhych, produced by Oksana Yanishevska.

The film reproduces the key events of 2012-2014 in the Mykolaiv region and Ukraine. The authors met with the direct participants of the Mykolaiv Euromaidan and tried to find an answer to the question: what would have happened if Mykolaiv had not risen and stopped the «Russian Spring» in 2014?

  • Battle for Voznesensk (2022), author Oleh Dereniuha
A month after successfully repelling the assault on Voznesensk, the NikVesti team went to the city to find out how they managed to win the battle against the outnumbered enemy. Side by side, the people of Voznesensk together with the Armed Forces and the police defended the city, preventing the Russian troops from advancing deep into the south of Ukraine and planning an attack on Odesa.

  • There will be water tomorrow (2024), director and producer Lesia Bakalets
The film will tell about the life of the village a year after the disaster and flooding that changed its fate. The village of Afanasiivka, home to 368 people, was significantly affected by flooding after the Kakhovka dam broke. Every fifth house was under water, and even after a year the village did not recover. The flooded houses, mostly built of clay and shell, still remain damp.
