The Regional Council proposes to involve Denmark in a study of groundwater in the Mykolaiv region

A pilot project is to be launched in the Mykolaiv region to study groundwater, followed by the creation of a map of groundwater resources. To this end, the regional council will seek assistance from Denmark.

This was announced during a meeting of the regional commission on environmental issues, according to NikVesti.

It should be recalled that at previous meetings, councillors and representatives of the regional water resources office in Mykolaiv region noted that the problem of supplying the region with drinking water had worsened when the Russians destroyed the «Dnipro-Mykolaiv» water pipeline, and subsequently blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. Residents began to tap into groundwater, including by drilling wells without any oversight. Climate change, which has led to drier conditions, is also having an impact.

The Mykolaiv Regional Council has therefore appealed to the Cabinet of Ministers regarding the conservation of the region’s water resources. In particular, they are proposing to launch a pilot project to study groundwater and create a map of it.

At the meeting on 16 June, councillors recommended that the regional water resources office draw up a tripartite memorandum between themselves, the Danish representative office in Mykolaiv and the regional council regarding cooperation on the development of a groundwater map for the Mykolaiv region.

In addition, the chair of the regional council is to approach the Danish representative office to request that its experts provide a programme for geological modelling and mapping of groundwater from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, and to consider the possibility of supplying or purchasing research equipment.

«It (the programme, — note) does, in principle, exist, and Denmark is prepared to provide it to us,» explained Alla Riazhskykh, chair of the committee.

The Ecology Department of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration was advised to identify the locations where water samples should be taken as a matter of priority.

It should be noted that the chair of the Mykolaiv Regional Council is to resubmit a request to the Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine regarding funding for the dredging of the Mertvovod riverbed in the Voznesensk district. It has transpired that the dredging of the Mertvovod is provided for under relevant state programmes; however, no funds have been allocated for this work in 2026.
