In Mykolaiv, an inspection of ventilation systems was carried out in 86 of the 97 shelters used in schools, nurseries and extracurricular institutions. Deficiencies were identified in four institutions during the inspections.

This was reported by Hanna Lychko, head of the Education Department of Mykolaiv City Council, during a staff meeting on 5 October, according to NikVesti.

According to her, there are a total of 97 shelters in the city’s educational establishments, all of which have the relevant certificates and are used as part of the educational process.

«In schools, nurseries and out-of-school institutions, we have a total of 97 civil defence shelters, all of which have the necessary permits, and we use them as part of the educational process. A key issue for us remains the organisation of the educational process within the shelters themselves, which is why we constantly monitor the ventilation systems,» said Hanna Lychko.

To inspect the ventilation systems, the education authority held a tender and entered into a contract with a contractor responsible for their maintenance.

«As of today, out of 97 educational establishments, a full inspection of the ventilation systems has already been carried out in 86. Deficiencies were identified in four of them, and these have already been rectified. The first full maintenance of the ventilation systems is scheduled to be completed by 20 October 2026,» she reported.

Meanwhile, in response to an information request from NikVesti, the Department of Education stated that it had separately commissioned laboratory tests to analyse the levels of dust, ammonia, phenol and formaldehyde in the air, as well as the concentrations of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and radon. Separately, air temperature, humidity and lighting levels are to be checked.

However, at the time of preparing the response to the request, the Department had not yet received the results of these tests.

«The results of the measurements have not been provided to the Department of Education, as the work has not yet been completed,» the Department of Education stated.

As of 6 October, 26 general secondary schools in Mykolaiv are operating in-person, a further 27 are operating in a blended format, and 11 are operating remotely.
