Poll: Almost half of Ukrainians consider the lynching of war criminals to be justified

Opinions are divided among Ukrainians regarding the justification of lynching of those guilty of war crimes: 46% of respondents believe that lynching is justified, while 51% have the opposite opinion.

This is evidenced by the survey results of the «Rating» sociological group.

75% of respondents disagree with the fact that justice can be achieved without the arrest and trial of those guilty of the attack on Ukraine and war crimes. 22% agree with the possibility of achieving justice under such conditions.

According to about 50% of respondents, the establishment of justice for war victims depends most on the president. 37% of respondents consider the parliament responsible, 35% — the government. About 25% of respondents believe that the citizens of Ukraine are responsible, young people share this opinion more often than other age groups.

Ukrainians were also asked how collaborators should be punished. The majority (66%) of respondents believe that interaction with the occupation authorities should limit the possibility of holding certain positions. A quarter of respondents consider it appropriate to apply a fine. At the same time, about 20% said that it is necessary to limit the participation of collaborators in public life or assign public works.

At the same time, in the opinion of about 40% of respondents, amnesty can be granted to those convicted of crimes that did not lead to the death of people, or on the condition that they perform socially useful work to restore the country. Also, in the opinion of about 25%, the provision of important and truthful testimony and payment of compensation to the victims can be grounds for amnesty. Voluntary confession of a specific crime may be such a condition for 20% of respondents. And 14% of respondents believe that amnesty for people guilty of war crimes is impossible under any conditions.

The survey was conducted on October 18-24, 2023 in all regions, except for the temporarily occupied territories of Crimea and Donbas, as well as territories where there is no Ukrainian mobile communication at the time of the survey.

2,000 people over the age of 18 were surveyed using the CATI method. The sample is representative in terms of age, gender and type of settlement. The error of representativeness of the study does not exceed 2.2%.
