«We want it all to be done at minimal costs», — the vice-mayor of Mykolaiv promised that during the war there would be no large investments in bike lanes

The first deputy mayor of Mykolaiv, Vitalii Lukov, said that at the moment there is no question of full-scale construction of bicycle infrastructure, as such expenses are impractical in the conditions of war.

He said this on the air of the MART TV channel.

According to him, bicycle markings are placed on the repaired roads of Mykolaiv in order to connect them together and create a single bicycle infrastructure.

— We went this way. Of course, large capital investments here are impossible, impractical and inappropriate. But taking into account the needs of cyclists when creating road markings, when creating traffic patterns is mandatory, and this is the mayor's clear position. On those streets that have been renovated, for example on Troitska Street, this scheme is applied. It is applied not just like that. This is a rather serious document that agrees with the patrol police and is the basis for ensuring traffic, — explained Vitalii Lukov.

He also added that as early as 2023, more bicycle markings will appear on the city's roads.

— This is exactly what we are working on. We want it all to be done at minimal costs. Because this traffic system must be developed and applied to the roadway. There is nothing seditious here. This year, we will receive additional kilometers of this cycling infrastructure. Further, we are working on making bicycle platforms in different areas of the city and gradually connecting them into a single continent, — said the deputy mayor.

We remind you that in 2021, the city hall considered several projects related to the arrangement of bicycle paths in Mykolaiv. This year, on November 7, they finished putting bicycle markings along Soborna. However, already in December, the paint started to wash off. Later, the Mykolaiv City Hall admitted that the paint on the bicycle path in the center was applied with violations and promised to correct the situation.

Also in September 2021, the Department of Housing and Communal Services of the City Council concluded a contract with the Kyiv-based company «Istok-A» for the construction of the first full-fledged bicycle path in Mykolaiv for 4.6 million hryvnias. Earlier, the Department also announced that 67 poplars and acacias must be cut down for the construction of a bicycle path along Kurortna Street. Instead, they promised to plant 70 new trees. The project was not implemented due to the beginning of a full-scale war with the Russian Federation.

Recently cycling of Mykolaiv criticized the project of the DHCS to arrange a bicycle lane from Narodnyi Sad Park to Peremohy Park.

Mykolaiv cyclists are dissatisfied with the quality of the asphalt, sections of which are allocated for lanes. They also complained there that the officials ignored the agreements with the bicycle traffic on the arrangement of the lanes.

Earlier it was also reported that the Danish urban planner Mikael Colville-Andersen and his team are developing a concept of bicycle infrastructure for Mykolaiv.
