As of the end of November, 57 hectares of the Mykolayiv region were littered with construction debris created as a result of shelling.
These environmental damages amounted to 2.2 billion hryvnias, according to the article «Eco-development of the South: where does the waste from the destruction disappear and what is the useful example of Kharkiv», writes NikVesti.
The situation is dangerous for the environment of the region, because such construction waste is different from «classical», the chairman of the board of the Association of enterprises in the field of hazardous waste management, practicing ecologist Kyrylo Kosourov told us. Such raw materials include not only concrete and fittings, but also a lot of household items and electrical appliances, which makes it difficult to reuse.
The expert notes that part of the waste contains toxic substances that pollute the air, soil and groundwater. For example, the same asbestos from which slate was made in Soviet times belongs to the category of hazardous materials.
— In such a case, the negative impact on the environment multiplies many times over, — added Kyrylo Kosourov.
The waste from the destruction becomes dangerous from the moment of its formation, reports the ecologist: «A rocket flew in, a fire broke out and the combustion products are already entering the atmosphere. Further, garbage is formed and lies, it is washed away by sediments, and all this gets into the soil, and over time - into the aquifers."
