Today, on 6 December, Ukrainians celebrate St Nicholas Day — the date was moved from 19 December after the transition to the New Julian calendar. St Nicholas is one of the most revered figures in Christian culture. He is considered to be the patron saint of children, sailors, travellers and those in trouble.

Did St Nicholas really exist?

The historical prototype of the saint is Nicholas of Myra, a bishop who lived in the III-IV centuries in the city of Myra (now part of Turkey).

Born around 270 in the city of Patara, he became a bishop at a young age and became famous for his mercy, helping the poor and quiet charity. His image became the basis for numerous legends about St Nicholas the Wonderworker.

Most of the information about the saint comes from hagiographies, texts that combine historical basis with folk tales, so it is sometimes difficult to distinguish facts from symbolic stories.
