A website entitled «Tavrian Painting» has been launched in the Mykolaiv region, bringing together the history of this form of folk art, its symbolism, painting techniques and works by master artists. The resource is available in Ukrainian and English.

NikVesti was informed of this by the non-governmental organisation «Pivden Centre for Adult Learning and Education», which implemented the project with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation.

On the website, you can find out how Tavrian painting originated, which colours and patterns are characteristic of it, and what the depicted symbols mean. Separate sections feature research, teaching materials and instructional videos for those who wish to master the painting technique themselves.

The website also features digitised examples of works by contemporary artists, including Liubov Paraniuk, and Yevheniia Bondarenko, the first researcher of Tavrian painting.

Furthermore, the website introduces artists, researchers, academic and civil society organisations involved in the preservation and development of this tradition. It will also publish announcements and reviews of themed events.

Tavrian painting is a traditional decorative art form of southern Ukraine, associated in particular with the Kinburn Spit. It is characterised by shades of blue and light blue, floral ornaments and motifs linked to the sea.

According to the project’s creators, the website was set up to preserve knowledge of Tavrian painting and make it accessible regardless of where one lives. Thanks to the English-language version, foreign users will also be able to learn about the tradition.

The project was implemented as part of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation’s «Cultural Heritage» competitive programme, in collaboration with the Mykolaiv Regional Museum of Local History and the Digital Transformation Department of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration.

It is worth noting that Tavrian mural painting, which is being actively revived in Mykolaiv, has been officially included in the National List of Elements of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ukraine.
