Twice as many people have died since the start of the year as have been born in Mykolaiv

Since the start of the year, 485 babies have been born in Mykolaiv, whilst 1,160 residents have died.

This was revealed during an open staff meeting on Monday, 6 April, according to NikVesti.

According to the Department of Health, 485 children have been born in Mykolaiv since the start of the year: 249 boys and 236 girls.

According to Serhii Vaseleha, director of the municipal institution Mykolaiv Funeral Service, 384 people died in March, of whom 189 were men and 195 were women. It should be noted that 395 residents died in February, and 381 in January.

Furthermore, 811 people were registered last month, whilst 1,519 were removed from the register, 660 of whom due to death. Since the start of the year, 1,904 people have been registered, and 3,511 removed from the register, 1,468 of whom due to death.

Over the past five years, the birth rate in the Mykolaiv region has almost halved. Whilst 7,558 children were born in 2020, the figure for 2025 stands at 3,179.

According to the Health Department of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, 7,558 children were born in 2020, of whom 4,401 were in Mykolaiv. In 2021, 6,928 babies were born, 4,041 of whom were in Mykolaiv.

At the start of the full-scale war, in 2022, 4,175 children were born in the Mykolaiv region, 1,670 of them in Mykolaiv. In 2023 and 2024, the number of newborns rose slightly, but the region has not yet returned to pre-war levels.

So, the number of newborns in the Mykolaiv region:

• 2020 — 7,558 children, of whom 4,401 were in Mykolaiv

• 2021 — 6,928 children, of whom 4,041 were in Mykolaiv

• 2022 — 4,175 children, of whom 1,670 were in Mykolaiv

• 2023 — 4,501 children, of whom 2,235 were in Mykolaiv

• 2024 — 4,463 children, of whom 2,377 are in Mykolaiv

• First 9 months of 2025 — 3,179 children, of whom 1,668 are in Mykolaiv
