Mykolaiv City Council is seeking ₴105 million for two memorial complexes

The construction of two memorial complexes in Mykolaiv to honour fallen defenders will cost 105.8 million hryvnias.

The relevant projects have been published on the DREAM state system — local authorities are seeking donors to fund them, NikVesti reports.

The first memorial complex is planned to be built on the grounds of the Central City Cemetery on Kherson Highway in the Inhulskyi district.

«The memorial complex is intended to immortalise the memory of the fallen, create a space for remembrance, hold commemorative events and allow for individual visits,» it states.

The total cost of the project is 53 million hryvnias, the Capital Construction Department told NikVesti.

A second memorial complex is planned for the cemetery in the Korabelnyi district, between Andrii Antoniuk Street, Haharin Street and Bohoiavlenskyi Avenue.

In the centre of the complex, there are plans to build a square with a memorial stele. The project also includes avenues, landscaping, lighting and burial plots for servicemen with name plaques. Construction of the complex is planned in two stages: first, the central part of the memorial will be developed, followed by the burial sites.

The cost of this project is estimated at 52.8 million hryvnias according to an expert report, the Capital Construction Department has reported.

Thus, the total cost of the two memorial complexes exceeds 102 million hryvnias.

«We are seeking donors, sponsors and relevant state budget funding programmes for the construction of the memorial complex in the Korabelnyi district. Once a positive expert report has been received for the construction of the complex in the Inhulskyi district, a search will also be initiated for organisations interested in implementing the project,» said Oleksii Savchuk, head of the Capital Construction Department, in a comment to NikVesti.

The complexes could be built within two years if the city manages to secure the necessary funding, he added.

«Provided there is adequate funding, the projects can be implemented within 24 months,» added Oleksii Savchuk.

Honouring fallen soldiers in the Mykolaiv region

In January 2023, Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych said that the city council was developing a plan to create a memorial area for Mykolaiv residents who died as a result of the full-scale war. Following this, plans were announced to build an Avenue of Remembrance for fallen soldiers and defenders in Mykolaiv during 2024. The mayor later announced that the city council had already decided on the location: it will be on Kherson Highway, opposite Mykolaiv Zoo.

It later emerged that there are plans to establish special sections for the honourable burial of fallen servicemen at three cemeteries in the city:

• the cemetery in the Matviivka neighbourhood at 161 Verkhnia Street;

• the cemetery in the Korabelnyi district on Zhukova Street;

• the Balabanivske Cemetery in the Korabelnyi district.

The estimated cost of constructing the military cemetery in the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv is 47 million hryvnias.

As a reminder, an «Alley of Glory» will be created at the municipal cemetery in Balovne, Mykolaiv, where fallen servicemen who gave their lives for the country’s independence and sovereignty will be laid to rest.

In 2024, the Mykolaiv Department of Architecture approved the design brief for a memorial complex in honour of the military.

In January 2025, it emerged that the Capital Construction Department had concluded a contract worth 1.4 million hryvnias, without a tender, for the engineering design of the memorial complex dedicated to the memory of fallen servicemen. It will be located on the grounds of the Central City Cemetery on Kherson Highway.
