US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called on UN member states to support an American draft resolution to mark the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The document calls for a swift «of the conflict» and the establishment of a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.
The US State Department issued a statement on Saturday, 22 February.
It stated that on the third anniversary of the «Russian-Ukrainian war», the United States proposed «a simple, historic resolution» at the UN and called for its support, «to pave the way for peace».
«This resolution is in line with President Trump's view that the UN should return to its founding purpose, enshrined in the UN Charter, to maintain international peace and security, including through the peaceful settlement of disputes. If the United Nations is truly committed to its original purpose, we must recognise that while there may be challenges, the goal of peace remains within reach,» he explains.
The draft resolution expresses sorrow over «the tragic loss of life during the Russian-Ukrainian conflict» and calls for a swift end to the conflict and the establishment of a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.
At the same time, there is no mention of a full-scale invasion, the occupied territories of Ukraine, Russia's violation of international law, or that it is an aggressor state.
It should be noted that the United States refused to co-sponsor another draft resolution from the European Union and Ukraine, which refers to «the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation» and demands that Russia «immediately, fully and unconditionally withdraw all its armed forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders».
The UN General Assembly will vote on both draft resolutions on Monday, 24 February, the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier it was reported that the United States allegedly for the first time opposed the idea of directly calling Russia the aggressor in a joint statement by the G7 leaders, timed to coincide with the third anniversary of the full-scale war. In addition, the participation of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in the virtual summit of the Group of Seven has not yet been agreed.
