The Global Peace Summit was held on June 15-16. This is an international meeting at the level of leaders of countries and governments, which was jointly organized by Ukraine and Switzerland in Bürgenstock at the initiative of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The leaders of the countries noted that it was possible to attract an unprecedented representation of participants from 101 countries and international organizations from all continents to the inaugural Peace Summit: Latin America, the Middle East and Asia, Africa, Europe, the Pacific region, Australia, North America. Two thirds of the participating countries are represented at the highest level. The summit allowed each of the participants to demonstrate global leadership.
«Another part of the countries and leaders showed interest in our Summit and reacted to the peace-making impulse of the Peace Formula. And even if they are not here today, at the first Summit, we managed to bring back to the world the idea that collective efforts can stop war and establish a just peace. This idea will definitely work, because the world has power,» said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The peace summit became the main diplomatic event of this summer and a great diplomatic and political success for Ukraine, which managed to organize such a large-scale international event for the first time. In fact, this measure is the first step towards a just peace based on the UN Charter and the basic principles of international law.
During the Global Peace Summit, participants agreed on a common position on three points: food security, nuclear and energy security, and the release of all captured and deported Ukrainian men and women, adults and children abducted by Russia. Key principles on these elements for a just and lasting peace are set out in the Joint Communiqué on the Foundations of Peace.
The peace summit became a platform for the development of practical solutions that will help overcome the consequences of the Russian Federation's actions to undermine food security in the world, as well as develop tools for countering similar aggressive actions in the future.
«I hope that we can achieve results as soon as possible. And it is these and other similar practical steps to restore security and peace that will prove to everyone in the world that the full effectiveness of the UN Charter — all its principles and goals — can be restored,» Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
It should be noted that the President of Ukraine presented the Peace Formula during the G20 leaders' summit in Indonesia in November 2022. Subsequently, four meetings of national security advisers took place: in Copenhagen, Jeddah, Malta and Davos. After the last such meeting and Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Switzerland in January this year, preparations for the inaugural Peace Summit began.
