Mykolaiv deputies are asking to resume the work of the committee on accessibility for people with disabilities, which ceased operations during the full-scale war.
During the meeting of the Mykolaiv City Council commission on housing and communal services, Yurii Stepanets, a deputy from the «Servant of the People» party, made such a proposal, they write NikVesti.
He offered to send a recommendation to Deputy Mayor Yurii Andriienko, who heads the committee, to hold the first meeting already in November.
«The number of people with disabilities in the city is increasing, along with the number of problems. Unfortunately, in connection with the full-scale war, the work of the accessibility committee was suspended, it was reformatted by order of the mayor, and a new composition was approved. However, even with the approved composition, the committee still does not work and does not resolve urgent issues,» said Yuriii Stepanets.
According to him, as a deputy, he receives many appeals from citizens with reduced mobility, in particular, regarding the lack of ramps and unimproved sidewalks.
«Let's make a recommendation from our commission regarding holding a meeting of the accessibility committee in November, because many issues have accumulated, in particular, in the field of improvement and housing and communal services,» noted Yurii Stepanets.
The chairman of the commission, deputy from the «Proposition» party, Dmytro Ivanov, supported the proposal. According to him, the number of people with disabilities has increased in Mykolaiv due to the full-scale war.
«I agree with you, because I myself face difficulties: I can't even get into the city council, because my stroller does not fit either through the door or the elevator, there are no entrances in many places. That's why we need to address this issue, because after the invasion, many people became disabled, and these barriers need to be removed,» emphasized Dmytro Ivanov.
As a reminder, in August 2024, the Mykolaiv City Council approved the target program «Mykolaiv without barriers» for 2024-2026. The program should provide an opportunity for the formation of a complex system of rehabilitation and integration of persons with disabilities, strengthening of social protection of persons with disabilities and other low-mobility population groups.
It should be noted that, according to the data of the rating of Dostupno.UA, in 2021, Mykolaiv took 13th place among 19 large cities in terms of accessibility.
On June 13, 2023, the «Barrier-free Ukraine» conference was held in Mykolaiv, where the «Barrier-free Handbook» was presented.
During the conference, Mykolaiv City Council deputy Yurii Stepanets reminded that the city government should focus more attention on barrier-free and accessible city infrastructure for people with disabilities.
