«You wait, and you think that it will hit you now,» a military man from the Mykolaiv region talked about the defense of the region and service in the TRC

Senior sergeant Serhii with the call sign «Amateur», who joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 2022, shared his experience of participating in battles in Mykolayiv region and Kherson region. Currently, due to his health condition, the 56-year-old serviceman works in one of the Mykolaiv territorial centers of recruitment and social support (TRC).

Before the start of the full-scale war, Serhii worked abroad, engaged in entrepreneurship, and in February 2022 he sent his family abroad and joined the military commissariat. «Amateur» explained that his call sign reflects his path in the Armed Forces.

«I am not a professional soldier, but an amateur, as they say. That's why I chose the call sign «Amateur,» Serhii shared.

Having no combat experience, Serhii underwent training and later joined the 11th separate rifle battalion, where he performed tasks in the settlements of Davydiv Brid and Sukhyi Stavok on the border of the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions.

«They sat in a hole, took the hit, went to the control point on duty. When the Russians went on the offensive, they shot back. And they shot very hard, it was zero. It's the hardest there. You wait, and you think that it will hit you now,» said the soldier.

Later, Serhii was transferred to the chemical protection unit. In 2023, after an examination, he was found to be of limited suitability and sent to the territorial assembly center.

«I understand that they decided to send all the sick and wounded to the TRC. They no longer coped with combat tasks in the same way as young people,» says Serhii.

The man says that physically it has become easier to work in a new position, but morally, on the contrary, it is more difficult. Serhii was injured during one of his trips as an employee of the TRC.

«They met a man who did not want to present documents, a scuffle began, they started to fight. I fell, he fell on me, broke my collarbone. «I was out of the army for almost two months, I had an operation,» said the soldier.

Currently, ten servicemen with combat experience are serving in Serhii's unit, most of them were wounded. The man emphasized that he considers it unfair when some go to the front and others stay away.

«People have suffered a lot, and it seems unfair: some fight and others don't. Usually, people are well aware of their rights, but often forget about their responsibilities,» says the soldier.
