The Economist: Between 60,000 and 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers died in the war with Russia

During almost three years of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, at least 60-100 thousand Ukrainian soldiers died, and about 400 thousand soldiers were seriously wounded.

The Economist writes about it with references to Western intelligence data, official reports and intelligence from open sources.

Journalists noted that these reports are difficult to independently verify, and soldiers who are missing or presumed dead are not always reflected in these data.

«They assume that at least 60,000-100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died to date. Another 400,000 may have been seriously injured, preventing them from continuing the fight. The figures do not include civilian casualties, for which there is very little data,» writes The Economist.

In addition, the publication refers to the UAlosses website, according to which at least 60,435 Ukrainian soldiers have died since 2022.

«These figures indicate that more than 0.5% of the pre-war population of Ukraine — men of conscription age (18-49 years) — died. The UAlosses data are not exhaustive, and the ages of not all soldiers are known. The actual proportion of men who died in the war is higher. The share of those who were too severely wounded to continue fighting is even greater,» the publication noted.

The Economist also added that the Wall Street Journal report, published with reference to anonymous representatives of Western intelligence, reported that Russia had lost about 200,000 soldiers during this time.

In February 2024, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Ukraine had lost 31,000 soldiers during the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation.
