The centralised supply of drinking water in Mykolaiv is expected to be launched by August 2025.

This was announced by Serhii Sukhomlyn, head of the State Agency for Infrastructure Recovery and Development, on 10 February during a discussion panel on large infrastructure projects, a correspondent for NikVesti reports.

«If we were to build at the usual pace and according to the usual procedures, I think it would take us about a year and a half to build this facility. Today, we set a target to supply water to the city of Mykolaiv by August,» said Sukhomlyn.

At the same time, he added that the cost of building a new water supply system for Mykolaiv was reduced from 8 billion hryvnias to 5 billion hryvnias.

«I think we will save at least 3 billion hryvnias compared to the previous feasibility study for this facility.

I would also like to add that we have significantly improved the project itself by adding partial converters that were not accepted: a completely new modern water intake station and many other elements that, on the one hand, would have made the project more expensive, but on the other hand, we will show significant savings,» said Serhii Sukhomlyn.

After that, the Mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, spoke about «a temporary solution» that will help to supply drinking water to the city simultaneously with the launch of the new water supply system.

«We are now also cooperating with the Agency in this area. We are proposing, let's say, a temporary solution that, in the opinion of the Agency's experts, will allow Mykolaiv to restore water supply. I would like to emphasise that the city of Mykolaiv does not need to build a pipe — we are interested in drinking water. Therefore, in principle, we do not have a task to lay the pipe by August — we have a task to get drinking water in the city of Mykolaiv. Therefore, there is a technical decision of the agency that this issue will be resolved and a temporary solution will be the use of treatment facilities,» said the mayor.

Previously, a new water supply system for Mykolaiv was promised to be built by autumn 2025. However, this does not guarantee that the city will immediately receive drinking water, as a new water treatment system needs to be built, the European Investment Bank said.

Construction of the new water supply system began in early 2025. The cost of the work was reduced from 8.7 billion hryvnias to 5 billion hryvnias. This became possible after a detailed analysis of the project, which revealed several planning errors.
