There are currently five foster families in Mykolaiv, two of which were established in 2026.

This was reported by the Mykolaiv City Council’s «Children’s Services Department» in response to an information request from NikVesti.

They stated that the foster care service currently supports seven children who have been left without parental care. A further six children who have been left without parental care are in need of placement with a foster family.

To encourage more families to become foster carers, the department is running information campaigns and disseminating information about this service.

The city is also training new candidates. According to the department, in 2026, five people completed training to become foster carers and their assistants. A further three candidates for foster carer roles and three assistants have been referred for training.

«As of 14 October, three candidates for foster carers and three foster carer assistants have been sent for training; one candidate in the Central District submitted their application but subsequently, unfortunately, withdrew due to family circumstances,» the Children’s Services Department reported.

By way of comparison, in 2023, five candidates for foster carers and assistants completed the training; in 2024, nine; and in 2025, six.

The department also reports that it is continuing to seek people willing to become foster carers or foster families.

We would like to remind you that in April this year, another foster family was established in the Buzka territorial community in the Mykolaiv region.

It was also reported that there are foster families in 13 communities across the Mykolaiv region who help children in difficult life circumstances. Over the past year, 55 per cent of children returned to their biological parents after being in foster care.

There are only four foster families in Mykolaiv. However, to fully meet the community’s needs, at least 14–15 foster families need to be established.
