The defender of Voznesensk told how civilians helped during the battle for the city

Soldiers of the 80th separate amphibious assault brigade, who participated in the defense of Voznesensk, said that they had never seen such support from civilians anywhere, as in Voznesensk.

«Regarding civilians, I have never seen such support. It was some kind of outpost... You stand there at the crossroads, they run up, pour borscht... There was such communication between everyone, the police, the head, and volunteers. Some guys who sold military clothes were selling things just like that,» said Yurii, a military brigade member.

Volunteers organized a volunteer center in the local cultural center, where the soldiers found the things they needed: jackets, socks, sleeping bags.

«It didn't matter if he was a civilian or not. We were running, sweating a lot, and it was minus outside. It didn't matter, they just wanted to change their clothes to civilian or military, just to be warm,» Yurii recalled.

He told how local men, without military experience, helped them during battles, brought Molotov cocktails, and taught them how to use weapons.

«I saw really courageous men, not military men, who held weapons for the first time. They were given old Kalashnikov riffles, and we showed them how to charge the magazine. They ran with us, helped, brought Molotov cocktails,» said the soldier.

Yurii remembered how after the departure of the Russian troops, he and his comrades found the bodies of men who had joined the Territorial Defence Group. He says that they fired their weapons at Russian equipment, but instead the Russians shot them with armored personnel carriers.

«When the equipment arrived, we were in the center, part of the TDG remained on Bolharka (behind the destroyed bridge, note). And when we got there, we found their bodies. They died with weapons in their hands. It was clear that they were shooting at the equipment, because the stores were empty. And the Russians shot them with armored personnel carriers, just as they shot civilians,» said Yurii.

Defense of Voznesensk

In Voznesensk, as a result of hostilities, about 700 buildings were damaged, 56 of them were high-rise buildings.
