During the last four months, more than 337 shelters were built and equipped in Ukraine, with a total cost of 384.8 million hryvnias.

This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Strategic Industries of Ukraine, Tymur Tkachenko.

New shelters appeared in 165 educational institutions, 19 medical and 12 cultural institutions. Another 75 shelters were arranged in residential buildings, and 6 in administrative buildings.

Thus, 283 shelters were equipped as part of major repairs, 13 were built «from scratch», and six more were restored. During this time, it was also possible to build 27 modular shelters.

In total, 337 different shelters were equipped for 384.8 million hryvnias.

«Funds have been raised from subventions, community budgets and, of course, we receive a large amount of financial assistance from public organizations and philanthropists. Now we are directing maximum efforts for the safety of hospital patients and children in schools and kindergartens. Every shelter should become iron,» added Tymur Tkachenko.

Since the beginning of 2024, NikVesti has shown what the renovated shelters look like in one of the schools in Mykolaiv and the lyceum in the Soliani microdistrict. Journalists showed another storage facility during repair work.

So, in February, a shelter was set up in one of Mykolaiv's schools — it is designed for 225 people. A medical office and a ventilation system designed for the winter period were made in the shelter.

«The work was carried out for three months, during which time the ventilation system, water supply, equipped toilet rooms, medical room were made. The shelter has 9 rooms where children can stay,» said the director of the institution.

In March, NikVesti showed what the renovated shelter looks like at the lyceum in the Soliani microdistrict in Mykolaiv. The total area of the renovated premises is 290 square meters — it can accommodate 450 people. All the necessary communications for the safe stay of students and teachers were carried out in the premises: modern ventilation and lighting were installed, places for classes were arranged, three toilets and a small medical center were installed. The shelter is equipped with a main and an emergency exit.

At the end of March, NikVesti showed how the Save the Children organization sets up a shelter in one of Mykolaiv schools for children to stay during air raids.

According to the director of the institution, the premises, which were arranged as a shelter, were previously built as a bomb shelter.

«School of Stalin times. During the construction of any educational institution in those days, a bomb shelter was laid, not a basement. It is deep and probably served as a bomb shelter in those days, and then it was just a basement. All communications took place there, there was a shooting range, partly we made a small warehouse there — that's all its functionality,» explained the director of the school Viacheslav.
