The city of Mykolaiv plans to increase the salaries of music school staff by 30% next year. The city is trying to increase the prestige of work in the field of music education.

This was announced by Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych during a conversation with journalists, according to NikVesti.

At the same time, the mayor acknowledged that even raising salaries would not solve the problem of staff shortages. The Department of Culture, he said, continues to experience a severe lack of funding, which limits the ability to support extracurricular activities and music schools.

«As for culture, we critically lack funding to deal with extracurricular activities and music schools. Starting next year, we will increase the prestige of this work as much as possible — the salaries of music school employees will increase by 30%. But this won't make an explosion or attract a large number of people either. We need to allocate money for culture. But usually this process is funded on a residual basis, because, as always, we have problems with water, roads and falling apart buildings,» explained Oleksandr Sienkevych.

As a reminder, the Mykolaiv City Council has changed its plans for the fate of the Cultural Heritage Protection Department, which was to be removed from the specialised department and transferred to the Department of Architecture as part of the structure reform. Now the mayor's office sees it necessary to create a separate structural unit responsible for the cultural heritage of Mykolaiv.

In addition, the chief architect of Mykolaiv, Yevhen Poliakov, called the protection of cultural heritage an under-implemented area.

It is worth noting that the Department of Culture, Nationalities and Religions of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration warns the Mykolaiv City Council that the transfer of functions of protecting cultural heritage sites to the Department of Architecture and Urban Development may «create a potential conflict of interest».
