In Mykolaiv, the toponymy commission published the first proposals for street renaming as part of the decolonization process.
The corresponding list was posted on the Facebook page by Yevhen Homonyuk, a member of the commission.
Yevhen Homonyuk said that in addition to the mentioned streets, there are also those around which a discussion is being conducted, so they need public discussion. Their approval by the commission is postponed.
«In general, at the first stage, we have to submit proposals for renaming 171 streets and alleys of the city,» — he wrote.
In particular, among the approved names:
- Pushkinska Street to Arkasivska Street;
- Potemkinska Street to Kropyvnytskoho Street;
- Chkalova street to Bulvarna street;
- Dunayeva Street to Pryvozna Street;
- Marshal Vasylevskyy Street to 9-th Slobidska Street;
- Marshal Malinovskyy Street to 7-th Viiskova or Viiskova Street;
- Andreeva-Palahnyuk Street to Karaimska Street;
- Molodohvardiyska Street to Dmytro Kremin Street;
- Zaschuk Street to Tramvayna Street;
- Dmytrieva Street to Babel Street;
- Sorge Street to Lytovska Street;
- Gagarina street (Korabelny district) to Sudkovskyy street;
- Cosmonaut Volkov Street to Admiral Bilinskyy Street;
- Yesenina Street to Vysheslavskoho Street.
A number of streets in Korabelny district are proposed to be named after luminaries of the Ukrainian scene and dissident writers.
— A few more streets in the Korabelny district in honor of Maria Zankovetska, Ivan Karpenko-Karyy, Mykola Khvylovyy, Vasyl Stus, Mykhailo Semenko, Mykola Kulish, etc., — added Yevhen Homonyuk.
In a comment to «NikVesti» Yevhen Homonyuk added that the list was not complete. Separately, the commission unanimously approved the new name of General Sviridov Street, which will bear the name of Mykolaiv military man Gennadii Matulyak.
— My post is incomplete. The street of General Sviridov will be renamed after General Matulyak, it was unanimously voted for. There are proposals for military man Serhiy Tatarinov, who was almost the first to die during the 2014 war. Also Serhiy Hussidi and Oleg Kravets. But according to them, we have not yet decided on the streets. There are several proposals, so it needs to be discussed, — said the member of the commission.
It should be noted that during the work of the commission, media representatives are not invited to hearings and their holding is not announced in advance.
Kateryna Sereda, the regional representative of IMI in the Mykolaiv region, reacted to this fact in the comments under the post.
«It's a pity that the toponymy commission in Mykolaiv works closed to the public,» —said Kateryna Sereda.
In response to this, Yevhen Homonyuk emphasized that the commission works openly, but the reasons for not inviting journalists to the hearings are probably related to technical aspects.
— We broadcast the meeting in Zoom. Most likely, these are technical points, it is difficult for me to comment. But my position is about maximum openness. And this post is about the fact that we are not hiding anything. Perhaps we need to be even more open and collectively decide how this should happen. There are recordings of the meeting, but I did not check whether they were broadcast, — he answered.
As you know, in April the Mykolaiv City Council adopted a new regulation regarding the renaming of toponyms — the authorities plan to get rid of all Russian names in the city.
Also, the deputy commission on legality approved a new version of the regulation on the activities of the commission on toponymy, which was engaged in street renaming.
In particular, Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych reported that there was a commission on toponymy in the city, which was engaged in renaming streets, but as of today, its composition needs to be updated.
However, in August it became known that the toponymic commission has not yet started working. Due to the withdrawal of one of the candidates, the deputies of the city council will have to update the composition of the commission.
We will also remind you that Major General Dmytro Marchenko, who led the defense of Mykolaiv at the beginning of the full-scale war, opposed the renaming of one of the city's streets after him.
Previously, according to the interim results of a survey within the project «Decolonization: rethinking the imperial past in the public space of Mykolaiv», the name of Dmytro Marchenko became one of those in whose honor Mykolaiv residents propose to rename the streets of the city. The offer was submitted by 32 respondents.
In September, deputies of the Mykolaiv City Council approved the new composition of the toponymic commission. Major General Dmytro Marchenko was included in it, but with the note «by agreement».
