Photo: NikVestiYevhen Horburov, a member of the Mykolaiv Regional Council, has complained to the city council’s culture department that the memorial plaque to Shevchenko Prize laureate Eduard Shorin, which was damaged in 2019, has still not been restored.
He made this statement during an event marking the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine at the Mykolaiv Regional Universal Scientific Library, reports a correspondent for NikVesti.
During his speech, the councillor also drew attention to the condition of the cemetery where Shevchenko Prize laureates are buried, and called on the city authorities to address this issue.
Yevhen Horburov noted that Eduard Shorin is a significant figure for Mykolaiv, particularly due to his contribution to the city’s development and the creation of the Museum of Shipbuilding and Naval History.
«I would like to ask everyone — both the organisers and all those involved in this matter — to find an opportunity to visit the cemetery where the Shevchenko Prize laureates are buried. To see what condition they are in. In January 2019, the memorial plaque of Shevchenko Prize laureate Eduard Shorin was vandalised. He did a great deal for the socio-economic development of our regional centre. And most importantly, it is thanks to his leadership and efforts that we now have the renowned Museum of Shipbuilding and Naval History,» said Yevhen Horburov.
According to the councillor, after the plaque was destroyed, the city authorities promised to restore it, but this has not yet been done.
«At the time, the city authorities promised that the plaque would be restored. But as we can see, seven years have passed and the situation remains unchanged,» he emphasised.
In addition, Yevhen Horburov stated that the Mykolaiv region has potential winners of the Shevchenko Prize, but artists need greater support and attention from the authorities.
«We have such people. Today they are candidates for the Shevchenko Prize, but they are trapped in a closed circle and cannot break out of it on their own. I think that the regional authorities, the Department of Culture, and all of us need to work to ensure that the whole of Ukraine hears about these artists,» he added.
As a reminder, information plaques dedicated to fallen soldiers, those missing in action and prisoners of war were recently restored on Tsentralnyi Avenue in Mykolaiv. They had been torn down by vandals in early May.
In addition, the design of a memorial complex in honour of fallen soldiers in the Korabelnyi district has been completed in Mykolaiv, and funding is being sought for its construction.
