A suspect in spying on the Ukrainian Armed Forces ships defending Ukraine's maritime waters has been detained in Odesa.
This was reported by the Security Service of Ukraine.
It is noted that the 37-year-old unemployed Odesa resident was reconnoitering the basing points and routes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near the Odesa seaport. He was also supposed to find the firing positions of anti-aircraft missile systems and mobile fire groups of the Defence Forces. According to law enforcement, Russian troops were to use this data to prepare combat operations in the maritime zone using cruise missiles and kamikaze drones.
«According to the investigation, to collect intelligence, the traitor drove around the coast of the regional centre in his own car and secretly took photos and recorded the geolocation of military facilities on his phone», the statement said.
The man has now been served a notice of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason committed under martial law). The suspect is in custody without the right to be released on bail. He faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
In December 2024, the SSU military counterintelligence detained 12 suspected Russian agents and informants. They were spying on the Ukrainian defence forces in five regions of the country and were looking for the location of F-16 aircraft and other strategic facilities.
