As a result of the Russian attack in Odesa on 19 February, a fire broke out in the Peresypskyi district of the city. Experts estimated the environmental damage at 242,000 hryvnias.
This was reported by the State Ecological Inspectorate of the South-Western District.
It is noted that the shelling set fire to administrative and warehouse buildings. The flames covered 1,000 square metres, which released almost 80 tonnes of carbon dioxide into the air.
The information has been passed to the Operational Headquarters of the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine to create a unified register of environmental damage caused by armed aggression.
For reference: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a colourless gas that is odourless at low concentrations.
As a reminder, the shelling of Odesa on 19 February left more than 80,000 subscribers without electricity and heat. Fifty children from the destroyed kindergarten have been redirected to other preschools. Schoolchildren whose schools are currently without heating and electricity due to the shelling are still studying remotely.
