However, this amount will not be sufficient until the end of the summer, so the City Council will be asked to allocate additional funds.
The decision on the reallocation was adopted at a meeting today, 10 June, according to NikVesti.
During the Executive Committee meeting, the head of the Education Department, Hanna Lychko, announced that they were proposing to reallocate 864,500 hryvnias from meals for children in general education institutions to meals in kindergartens. Members of the Executive Committee agreed to this.
In a comment to NikVesti, Hanna Lychko clarified that the reallocated sum would not be sufficient until the end of the summer.
«It will definitely not be enough until the end of the summer. We have submitted a request to the mayor and the finance department. This is to be considered at the session,» explained the head of the education department.
Hanna Lychko also reported that by the end of the year, there is a shortfall of 149.48 million hryvnias for meals in all educational institutions where meals are provided.
«We have written down how much money we are short of until the end of the year. I don’t know how much they will give us, because the Department of Education does not have access to the revenue side of Mykolaiv’s budget. Therefore, it will not be the Department of Education that decides here, but we will operate within the limits of the funds allocated to us,» noted Hanna Lychko.
As a reminder, at the session of the Mykolaiv City Council on 28 May, it was announced that the Mykolaiv budget is short of almost 150 million hryvnias to provide meals for children in schools, nurseries and vocational colleges until the end of 2026.
The bulk of the funding is being directed specifically towards kindergartens, as schools receive some funding from the state budget. Over 109 million hryvnias are needed for kindergartens, over 33 million hryvnias for co-funding school meals, and a further 7 million hryvnias for special schools and vocational training institutions.
The City Council’s Education Department has noted that funds for meals in kindergartens may only last until 20 June.
In this regard, city council members have appealed to the Cabinet of Ministers and the Verkhovna Rada to allocate additional funds from the state budget for children’s meals.
The Education Department has now announced a tender for the provision of meals in the city’s kindergartens until October 2026. The estimated cost of the service is 69.1 million hryvnias.
