On Wednesday, August 21, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine supported the ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.

281 people's deputies voted for this decision, Yaroslav Zhelezniak, People's Deputy of the «Holos» faction, said.

Yaroslav Zhelezniak noted that the discussion was intense, with numerous speeches both for and against ratification.

Ukraine signed the Rome Statute on January 20, 2000, but ratification took place only now.

Ratification of the Rome Statute will allow Ukraine to appeal to other member states with a demand to execute arrest warrants for persons suspected of committing genocide and war crimes against the Ukrainian people. This decision also meets the key requirements of European integration and will increase the chances of injured Ukrainians to receive compensation.

In turn, the first deputy of the Committee on Law Enforcement of the Verkhovna Rada, People's Deputy Andrii Osadchuk clarified that «the ratification of the Rome Statute will enter into force only after the entry into force of the corresponding changes in the Criminal Code of Ukraine and the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine, which have not even begun to be discussed.»

We will remind that on February 1, 2024, the Rome Statute entered into force in Armenia, which means the official accession of the country to the International Criminal Court.
