Smyhal: a partial opening of the airspace is impossible due to the security situation

The Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal, stated that, given the current security situation, a partial opening of the airspace is currently impossible.

He stated this during the International Transport Forum, writes Ukrinform.

The Prime Minister explained that the government has conducted a risk assessment and determined the need for air defense forces and means to partially open the airspace, but the issues of security and the military situation remain fundamental.

«Our goal is to develop overland and alternative routes to ensure stable delivery of goods and passenger transportation,» he said.

Shmyhal emphasized that due to the Russian attacks, a significant part of the aviation infrastructure was damaged. At least 15 civilian airports were damaged during the fighting.

In addition, the enemy carried out about 60 attacks on the port infrastructure in the last three months, as a result of which almost 300 facilities and 22 civilian vessels were destroyed or damaged.

At the same time, the government continues to work on the development of alternative routes for the delivery of goods and the transportation of passengers, in particular through land borders and rail and road transport.

As you know, air traffic in Ukraine has been suspended since the beginning of the large-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine.

In November 2024, the senior partner of the Marsh McLennan consulting company said at the Kyiv International Economic Forum that Ukraine plans to restore the operation of one of its airports by the end of 2025, and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants it to be Boryspil.

We will remind that the Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine presented in Warsaw a road map for the opening of Ukrainian airspace during martial law.
