Medical institutions in Mykolaiv region lack almost 1200 doctors.

This was reported today, 15 January, by the head of the healthcare department of the Mykolaiv regional military administration, Iryna Tkachenko, according to NikVesti.

Another staffing problem in medicine is the large number of doctors of retirement age, namely 31%.

«As of today, the shortage of doctors is almost 1200 people, which is 32%. In addition, more than 850 doctors (31%) are over 60 years old,» said Iryna Tkachenko.

Iryna Tkachenko also noted that the shortage of healthcare workers is being reduced by interns who have arrived in Mykolaiv region from other cities.

«This year, for the first time, a reform concerning internships was launched. The healthcare department submitted an order for 300 interns. In fact, 58 interns studying on a state-funded basis and 28 students studying on a contract basis arrived in the region. As of today, 107 interns work in the region,» added Iryna Tkachenko.

Earlier it was reported that the mechanism for training epidemiologists at the regional level remains underdeveloped. Despite an appeal to the Ministry of Health, there is no basis for training such specialists in Mykolaiv region.
