Easter was celebrated in Mykolaiv: how the festivities unfolded in the city

On Sunday, 12 April, Mykolaiv joined in the Easter celebrations according to Orthodox and Greek Catholic traditions.

In 2026, the dates of Easter vary across different Christian denominations. Roman Catholics and Protestants celebrated the holiday on 5 April, whilst Orthodox and Greek Catholics celebrate Christ’s Resurrection on 12 April — a week later.

From early morning, thousands of townspeople headed to churches to have their Easter baskets blessed and to pray for peace. Police officers were stationed outside the churches, helping to coordinate the flow of worshippers and maintain order.

People came with their families, carrying traditional Easter baskets filled with Easter cakes, painted eggs and salt.

As a reminder, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is ready for a possible extension of the ceasefire beyond Easter. The Russian side has already been informed of this.

On Saturday, 11 April — the eve of Orthodox Easter — a ceremony marking the descent of the Holy Fire took place at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.
