On December 3, the World Climate Summit COP-28 was held in Dubai (UAE). The mayor of Mykolaiv Oleksandr Sienkevych became the only one among the leaders of the cities of Ukraine who joined the Council of Mayors and Leaders of the Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) to protect local decisions. He personally attended the summit in Dubai.
The organization's website states that since being elected mayor of Mykolaiv in 2015, Oleksandr Sienkevych has focused his attention on «reducing energy poverty by increasing energy security and efficiency, as well as strengthening the stability and resilience of the city's infrastructure». «It is noteworthy that Mayor Sienkevych coped with the huge problem of preserving the city's energy infrastructure and water supply during Russia's war against Ukraine,» the publication says.
«Even in the midst of a brutal war to protect freedom and democracy, Mayor Sienkevych also finds opportunities to lead the fight against climate change. His strong leadership will strengthen the Global Covenant of Mayors and its work at the COP28 Local Climate Action Summit — and beyond,» said former New York City Mayor Michael Rubens Bloomberg, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions and founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies.
In total, only 10 mayors of different cities of the world, including the mayor of Mykolaiv, are members of the Board of Directors.
«I am honored to join this motivated group of local leaders who are committed to building a more sustainable society and improving the quality of life of communities around the world. I look forward to the opportunity to bring my knowledge and unique experience to this group and work together to accelerate progress in the field of climate and energy for a greener and healthier future,» said Oleksandr Sienkevych.
