The mayor of Mykolaiv Oleksandr Sienkevych said that specialists are currently working on the idea of creating a new coat of arms of the city.
The mayor said this during his press conference on the results of 2023, NikVesti reports.
To the question of when they plan to announce the competition for the selection of the city's new coat of arms announced by the head of the city council's culture department, Yurii Liubarov, Oleksandr Sienkevych replied that specialists should work on this issue first.
«I think that specialists, heraldists and so on will work first. There they already say that this is not a galley at all, but a flying ship, and Sienkevych simply does not understand shipbuilding. Yes, I do not understand shipbuilding. I think that the specialists will work and say that maybe this is a bad idea in general and it should not be done, and a boat with oars is a boat and it does not need a sail,» said Oleksandr Sienkevych.
The mayor also added that the head of the cultural affairs department of the city council will announce all the information in the event of the implementation of this idea.
«I thought that this was information that would not need any additional hype, but everyone who could hyped it up. They also wrote that 200 thousand hryvnias will be given from the budget, do you understand? When this idea reaches some kind of realization, we will hear from you first of all from Yuriy Lyubarov. To date, I am not aware of this process,» said the mayor.
As you know, the mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, voiced the idea of replacing the city's coat of arms. For this purpose, a contest was announced, in which the author of the best sketch will receive 200,000 hryvnias. These funds will be personally allocated by the mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych, the head of Mykolayiv RMA Vitalii Kim and people's deputy Oleksandr Haidu.
Later, the mayor explained why such an idea arose: «The fact is that it depicts a galley with oars. Without sails. I think you all understand what such a galley means, who worked on it to death. We are not rowing slaves, not slaves. We absolutely do not need such symbols in the identity of our city!».
Secretary of the Mykolayiv City Council Dmytro Falko supported the idea of replacing the coat of arms of the city. In his opinion, the new coat of arms will be more modern and take into account the recent history of Mykolaiv.
