There are a number of reasons that make it impossible to hold elections in wartime. Among them, for example, the need for appropriate changes in legislation and not only that.
The head of state stated this in an interview with Cinque minuti.
«In order to hold elections during wartime in Ukraine, it is necessary to change the relevant legislation. Elections cannot be held during wartime,» Volodymyr Zelenskyy explained.
According to him, among other reasons, respect for the military, who are currently at the front and should also have the right to express their will during elections, is also important. Among other things, a separate infrastructure is needed that will allow 7 million Ukrainians who are currently abroad to participate in voting.
We will remind you that in October last year, 63.8% of surveyed Ukrainians would have a negative attitude to the idea of holding national elections in the country before the end of the war, while only 15.1% of citizens were positive, and 21% were undecided.
At the end of August 2023, US Senator Lindsey Graham from the Republican Party noted that despite the war, elections should be held in Ukraine in 2024.
As previously reported, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he will run for president if the elections are held during the war.
In February 2024, the vast majority of Ukrainians (69%) believe that Volodymyr Zelenskyy should serve as president until the end of martial law.
