Starting from February 24, 2022, 30 media were forced to stop their work in the Mykolaiv region. The region is among the top four in this indicator in the country.
This is stated in the study of the Institute of Mass Information, published on the occasion of 1000 days of full-scale war in Ukraine.
At the same time, only 7 media of the region managed to resume their work during this time.
The media shutdown has hit the hardest in regions close to the battle lines. The leaders in terms of the number of closed media are Zaporizhzhia region (50 media), Donetsk region (35), Kherson region (34), Mykolaiv region (30), Kharkiv region (29), Luhansk region (26) and Odesa region (24).
In total, 329 media were forced to stop working in Ukraine during the 1,000 days since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation. Only 16% of them (52 media) managed to resume their activities.
The main reason for the closure of the media was the temporary occupation of the territories (117 closed media) and financial difficulties caused by the war (96). For example, in the Odesa region, 83% of those media outlets that closed down stopped working due to financial difficulties.
In the third place among the reasons for closure are intense hostilities, which made it impossible for journalists to work (82 media outlets were closed due to this).
29 media said that they closed due to other reasons — relocation of journalists, problems with distribution, inability to work as before the war.
Interestingly, six media outlets ceased operations due to the mobilization of their chief editors or managers. These are two media each in the Mykolaiv and Chernivtsi regions, and one each in the Kirovohrad and Cherkasy regions.
As for the types of media that have closed, television has suffered the biggest losses. According to IMI, 105 TV channels have closed since the beginning of the invasion, which is 32% of all media outlets that have ceased operations. In second place in terms of the number of closed resources is print media, 95 newspapers have disappeared (this is 29% of all media outlets that have ceased their activities). The Russian invasion also caused the closure of 77 radio stations (23% of all media that closed). Online media was the least affected, with 52 news sites closed, accounting for 16% of all closed media.
The leading regions where the media managed to resume their work are Kherson (14 media), Kharkiv (12) and Mykolaiv regions (7). The restoration of media work took place mainly after the de-occupation of the territories captured by the Russian Federation, where the journalists returned.
We will remind you that NikVesti was included in the updated map of recommended media developed by IMI and DM.
