US First Lady Melania Trump is working on her own initiative to return Ukrainian children abducted by Russia and pays considerable attention to this issue.

This was stated by US President Donald Trump, answering a journalist's question during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

One of the media representatives asked Zelenskyy whether he appreciated Melania Trump's efforts to return the abducted children and asked whether the White House chief of staff had asked his wife to help in this matter.

«She wanted to do it. She is just very concerned about the children. And I think she's done a really good job of drawing attention to this issue,» the US president said.

Trump also noted that the exact number of abducted children is currently unknown.

«Some say it's 20,000, and some say it's 300. It's a big difference, and no one really knows. But she is very worried about the children. She thinks about children all the time,» he added.

Earlier, Melania Trump said that she had established communication with Vladimir Putin about the abducted Ukrainian children. According to her, she has «an open channel of communication» with the Kremlin president, who is allegedly ready to work with her to return the children.

Representatives of the first lady, she said, have been working with the Kremlin team, «to ensure that the children are reunited with their families between Russia and Ukraine». Some of the minors have already been returned home.
