Following an appeal by residents of Velyka Korenikha to Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych, they received a response. Rubbish collection from the neighbourhood will continue to be funded from the city budget. Funding has been allocated until 2029. As for municipal buses, they cannot yet be introduced to the neighbourhood.

The residents published the responses in the neighbourhood group, NikVesti reports.

Regarding transport, the Mykolaiv City Council informed residents that in 2025 the city received only part of the planned 26 buses.

«These buses are planned to be deployed on routes, including to the city’s outlying neighbourhoods. However, to meet the needs of residents in all outlying areas for comfortable and high-quality passenger transport via public transport, a significantly larger number of both vehicles and drivers is required,» the city council stated.

The response also added that once the entire batch of buses has been delivered, a tender will be held for the operation of the route to Velyka Korenykha.

Regarding waste collection, residents of the neighbourhood were informed that a 2024 decision by the Mykolaiv City Council stipulates that waste will be collected and removed from Velyka Korenykha at the expense of the Mykolaiv budget. Funding has been allocated for the period from 2025 to 2029.

As for residents’ concerns regarding soil and water contamination and odours from the landfill, the city council also responded: «Mykolaivkomuntrans» is conducting environmental studies, and these have shown that everything is safe.

«The results of the latest routine studies have confirmed the safety of the atmospheric air quality at the boundary of the sanitary protection zone,» the response states.

Residents were also told that a biogas plant is operating at the site to reduce biogas emissions into the air. However, the city council also cited the deterioration of the environment due to the fact that there are other enterprises near the landfill that pollute the surrounding area. An asphalt plant is located 300 metres away.

«During the production of asphalt mix, one of the hazardous substances emitted into the air is phenol,» the council noted.

Furthermore, officials informed residents of Velyka Korenykha that the condition of groundwater is affected by sewage, the lack of a sewerage system in residential areas, the collection of sewage in cesspits without watertight walls, and runoff from agricultural land, businesses and industrial enterprises.

«We believe that the possible deterioration in the quality of water, soil and atmospheric air in the Velyka Korenykha neighbourhood is not directly and exclusively linked to the activities of the solid waste landfill, as, apart from this facility, there are other industrial sites and factors in the surrounding area that may also affect the state of the environment,» the city council stated.

As a reminder, residents of Velyka Korenykha have appealed to the mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Senkevych. They are complaining about transport issues, in particular the lack of free travel for those entitled to concessions, and also emphasise that the nearby municipal landfill is affecting people’s health. They are therefore asking for the waste collection concessions to be retained.

Furthermore, there are no toilet facilities at the cemetery in Velyka Korenykha, Mykolaiv. Residents are asking for this to be resolved so that people do not relieve themselves in the cemetery.

As a reminder, in August 2025, Mykolaiv Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych statedthat the authorities planned to launch a new bus route to the Velyka Korenykha neighbourhood. At the time, the mayor also mentioned providing subsidised travel for residents.

However, buses to the neighbourhood were not launched. In September 2025, the municipal enterprise «Mykolaivpastrans» stated that there was a need for daily transport of schoolchildren, which the company handles under a contract with the education department.
