Meteorologists of the Mykolaiv Hydrometeorological Center predict that the summer of 2024 will be traditional in the region. Deviations from the limits of normal indicators for the summer period are not expected.
The end of March and almost all of April this year were marked by an extraordinary heat wave. The average temperature reached a mark of 20 to 28 degrees Celsius per day. In particular, from April 8 to 10 , historical temperature records were recorded in Mykolaiv. According to the data of meteorological stations in the Mykolaiv region, an excess of heat by 1-7 times higher than the daily maximum was recorded. However, according to Mykolaiv forecasters, the summer of this year will be quite ordinary.
«It is expected that the summer will be normal, there will be waves of heat and cold, fronts will pass with local phenomena, gusts of wind, hail. There will be some hot days of abnormal heat and cooler days,» forecasters say.
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center emphasizes that a detailed forecast for the summer will be available only at the end of May, when climatological data will be analyzed. According to Nataliia Ptukha from the Hydrometeorological Institute, it is too early to talk about any abnormal weather conditions.
«The general trend, again, is that the temperature indicators are becoming higher and higher, but at the moment there are no prerequisites to say that the summer will be abnormal. Some analyzes will be conducted at the end of spring,» she adds.
Weather in Mykolaiv
In 2023, temperature records were set twice in Mykolaiv: in January (above 15°С) and in August (up to 36°С). In January, due to unusually warm weather for this month, the first snowdrops even bloomed in the Mykolaiv Zoo.
At the same time, at the beginning of 2024, meteorologists warned that the air quality in Mykolaiv may significantly deteriorate in the coming days, as dust from the Sahara will cover Ukraine.
Back in 2017, scientists expressed the opinion that due to global warming, Crimea will become an island, and Kherson and part of Mykolaiv Oblast will flood. They believe that Ukraine will face «red tides» characteristic only of the tropics.
And in 2019, it was reported that Mykolaiv is at risk of partial flooding by 2100 due to the rise in the level of the world ocean. This was discussed in the results of the study «Impact of sea level rise on the coastal zones of Ukraine due to climate change», carried out by the Center for Environmental Initiatives «Ekodiia».

What about the air in Mykolaiv?
In 2023, Mykolaiv took fourth place in the ranking of Ukrainian cities with the most polluted air. After that, the eco-organization SaveDnipro released information that last year in Mykolaiv, the highest concentration of formaldehyde in the air was recorded among Ukrainian cities.
Later, the Mykolaiv Regional Center for Hydrometeorology explained that formaldehyde has been the main pollutant of the city's atmospheric air for many years. An excess of nitrogen dioxide was also recorded.
The experts explained that the exceeded norms can be connected both with an increase in motor vehicles and with a possible change in the type of fuel used. And in order to reduce the level of formaldehyde in the air of Mykolaiv, it is necessary to develop a program of environmental safety of atmospheric air in the city, taking into account European experience.
At the same time, the Mykolaiv Regional Center for Hydrometeorology claims that the level of formaldehyde in the air of the city «is not critical», despite the fact that the average daily maximum permissible concentration is exceeded. This situation, they say, has persisted in the city for the past 10 years.
But the experts of the eco-organization SaveDnipro explained that due to the concentration of formaldehyde in the air of Mykolaiv, more than 1 in 10,000 citizens can potentially get oncology.
As early as 2020, the air quality index in Mykolaiv reached a level harmful to humans. The largest polluters of atmospheric air in 2021 were the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant, the Yugcement enterprise, and the Mykolaivgaz gas transportation system operator.
In general, the situation with the biggest air pollutants in the Mykolayiv region remains unchanged from year to year. According to 2018 data, Mykolaiv Alumina Plant, Yugcement and Mykolaivgaz were also the biggest air polluters in the region.
