In Mykolaiv, Lyceum №5 is planned to be joined to Lyceum №22 in order to preserve the teaching staff.
The relevant draft decision was considered at the meeting of the commission on health care, social protection of the population, education, culture, tourism, youth and sports of the Mykolaiv City Council on Tuesday, May 28, NikVesti writes.
Hanna Lychko, the head of the education department of the Mykolaiv city council, said that Lyceum No. 5 has only senior classes and there are not many children in the educational institution.
«Also, taking into account the new circumstances in the organization of the educational process in Lyceum №5, there is no protective shelter. Lyceum №22 has a protective shelter. But it's not even about the protective shelter, it's about the fact that the former Economic Lyceum №5 does not have so many children and the loss of the teaching staff is at risk, due to the fact that it is difficult to recruit children for senior classes. 271 children study in the institution, 181 children are planned for next year — that's seven classes. In order to preserve the teaching staff, it is planned to unite these two institutions,» said Hanna Lychko.
The members of the commission supported the decision, noting that it was a forced step.
What about children's education in Mykolaiv?
Mykolaiv schoolchildren have been studying online since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation. Although the government, with the help of donors and the state, is actively setting up shelters in educational institutions, which sometimes causes indignation among the townspeople.
The refusal of children to go to school is a guarantee of their personal safety, because Mykolaiv is still in the zone of possible ballistic damage from the Russian military, says Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych. At the same time, he emphasizes the importance of preparing shelters and resuming education in schools when the Armed Forces move the front line.
Currently, shelters have been installed in 37 educational institutions out of 142 schools and kindergartens in Mykolaiv. At the end of December 2023, the commission recommended the opening of seven more educational institutions with shelters.
In the next few years, the authorities plan to equip 54 shelters in kindergartens, schools and lyceums in Mykolaiv.
We will remind, this year the outflow of students was recorded in the schools of Mykolaiv. Compared to the last academic year , the number of schoolchildren decreased by 3,300. Vitalii Kim, the head of Mykolaiv RMA, explained that the city's schools are working online because they are still targets for the Russian army. Vitalii Kim also explained that the decision on the offline operation of the city's schools will be made by the Office of the President and the Ministry of Education.
We will remind that Lithuania plans to build a shelter school in the Mykolaiv region by the end of 2024. Similar underground institutions should appear in 5 more regions of Ukraine.
Restoration of gymnasium №2 in Mykolaiv
The issue of restoring the building of Gymnasium №2 was raised even before the full-scale invasion. In March 2021, the premises of the gymnasium building were recognized as emergency. At the time, a petition was created on the website of the city council to preserve the gymnasium in a viable condition, which was supported by more than a thousand citizens. Two days later, the head of the Mykolaiv regional state administration, Vitalii Kim, said that the regional government is ready to cooperate with the city government regarding the restoration of gymnasium №2.
In May 2021, the head of the capital construction department of Mykolaiv City Council Oleksandr Pozdniakov reported that two companies responded to a commercial proposal to investigate the state of emergency of the gymnasium. It turned out that only part of the roof is emergency, and there is no threat to the educational process. Then the library and museum were «moved out» from the wing of the gymnasium.
Later, the mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych, announced that they plan to carry out current repairs in gymnasium No. 2 by the end of 2021, and capital works will be postponed for the time being.
In July 2023, the Department of Town Planning, Architecture, Capital Construction and Support of Development Projects of the Mykolaiv State University commissioned a restoration project for the historic building of Lyceum №2. And later — he announced a tender for the restoration of the institution's building for 153 million 251 thousand hryvnias.
We will remind you that the reconstruction of Lyceum №2 in the center of Mykolaiv, which was damaged by shelling, is promised to be completed by 2025. This year, the government allocated more than half of the funds for this, but it is not yet known who will finance the works next year. This is stated in the article NikVesti «Survived four shellings: What is the fate of the historic building of Lyceum №2 in the center of Mykolaiv?».
The restoration of the historic building of gymnasium №2 was included in the top four objects of the region, for the restoration of which in 2024 the government allocated 1.2 billion hryvnias. From these funds, 149.5 million hryvnias were allocated from the state budget for the reconstruction of the institution.
