Mykolaiv fencer Olha Kharlan won gold at the stage of the World Cup in saber fencing, which is held in Lima, the capital of Peru.
This was reported by the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine on February 11.
In the final match, the Ukrainian confidently defeated Sugar Katynka Battai from Hungary.
Mykolaiv saber player started immediately from the main grid. In the quarterfinals, the Ukrainian defeated Lisa Pustai from Hungary (15:11), and then she defeated Elizabeth Tarkovsky from the USA (15:12). In the final, she defeated the Hungarian Sugar Katinka Battai (15:6).
For Olha Kharlan, the victory was the 14th at the stages of the World Cup. In total, the Ukrainian woman has 31 awards at this level.
We will remind you that the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine awarded the Mykolaiv saber player Olga Harlan as the winner of the «Women and Sports» competition in the «Beauty and Glory» category.
It was also reported that for the first time in the magazine's history, Vogue Ukraine dedicated three printed covers to three professional sportswomen. Mykolaiv fencer Olha Kharlan became one of the heroines of the cover.
As you know, Mykolaiv saber Olha Kharlan defeated Russian Anna Smirnova at the start of the World Fencing Championship in Milan (Italy). After the competition, the representative of Ukraine refused to shake the hand of the Russian woman, who, in turn, filed a protest due to the lack of «show of respect» on the part of the Ukrainian woman. For this, the International Fencing Federation (FIE) disqualified Harlan from the World Championship. After the incident, the athlete recorded a video message in which she thanked Ukrainians for their support.
However, on July 28, the International Olympic Committee granted Olga Harlan automatic qualification for the 2024 Olympics. The IOC supports her and allocates a quota for the Olympics due to the fact that she did not have the opportunity to win it at the World Championships, and later the World Fencing Federation suspended her disqualification.
