A court has remanded in custody the driver of an Audi who, whilst drunk, caused a fatal road accident in Mykolaiv

The Central District Court of Mykolaiv has imposed a pre-trial measure on the Audi driver who caused a fatal accident on Tsentralnyi Avenue on Saturday, 20 June. He has been remanded in custody without the option of bail.

The pre-trial measure for the Audi driver, Ihor Serhiienko, was determined today, 22 June, at the Mykolaiv Central District Court by Judge Olesia Deminska. The prosecution requested that he be remanded in custody for 60 days without the right to bail.

During the hearing, it was revealed that the suspect is a former soldier, but is not currently serving.

The Audi driver pleaded guilty but refused to give a statement.

«I am ashamed that this has happened,» said Ihor Serhiienko.

Whilst the court had retired to deliberate, the suspect apologised and said he understood that nothing could be undone.

Upon returning from the deliberation room, investigating judge Olesia Deminska ruled that the suspect should be remanded in custody without the right to bail until 19 August.

As a reminder, the accident occurred at around 10.15 pm at the junction of Tsentralnyi Avenue and Zakhysnykiv Mykolaieva Street (Dekabrystiv). According to police reports, an Audi, driven by a 31-year-old man, collided with a Citroën C3, which was being driven by a 50-year-old woman.

As a result of the collision, the Citroën driver died at the scene of the accident. Her two 17-year-old daughters were also injured. They were taken to hospital. Subsequently, one of the girls died in hospital.

Investigators detained the Audi driver in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. The man was under the influence of alcohol: his blood alcohol level was recorded at 2.51 per mille.

Investigators also charged the driver under Part 4 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine «Violation of road safety rules or transport operation regulations by persons driving vehicles whilst intoxicated, resulting in the death of several people». He faces up to 12 years’ imprisonment for this offence, with a driving ban of between 7 and 10 years.
