The water supply network in the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv is being upgraded with support from Denmark. The project aims to help reduce water wastage and quickly locate pipe damage.

This was announced by Deputy Mayor Serhii Korenev during a staff meeting on 15 June, according to NikVesti.

The project is being funded by the Danish government through the Nordic Environment Finance Corporation (NEFCO). It involves replacing and refurbishing pipes, as well as installing meters and equipment for the rapid detection of leaks, as previously reported by NikVesti, citing Jakob Hansen, Head of the Danish Embassy’s office in Mykolaiv. In total, 26 kilometres of water supply networks are planned to be replaced.

Deputy Mayor Serhii Korenev explained that the project has been divided into two major components and 14 separate sub-projects.

The first component is being implemented by a Danish company. It consists of three sub-projects: work on one is already 87 per cent complete, design work is ongoing on another, and a third is awaiting permission to start construction.

The second component is being carried out by Ukrainian contractors — companies from Mykolaiv and Kyiv. It comprises 11 sub-projects, he explained.

Within the first group of sub-projects, work is already approximately half complete. In the second group, one site has received planning permission, whilst the rest are still at the design stage. In the third group, work is already underway on two sites, with completion at around 50 per cent, whilst the necessary permits are being obtained for a further two.

«The project is actively underway; we hold regular meetings with NEFCO,» added Serhii Korenev.

Earlier, Jakob Hansen, head of the Danish Embassy’s office in Mykolaiv, explained that in certain parts of the Korabelnyi district, water losses in the networks exceed 50 per cent.

«Water losses in the networks there are over 50 per cent. Either this water is simply leaking away, or it is what is known as «commercial losses» — water that is not accounted for. But all of this can be reduced. In other words, these measures will help the water utility to immediately identify where there are leaks in the pipes, where the pipes are damaged, and exactly where to reduce these water losses,» he explained.

As a reminder, Denmark has also provided Mykolaiv with €7.2 million for solar power stations, as well as €7.2 million for the installation of individual heating units (IHUs).
