UNICEF is to supply inverters worth ₴3.8 million to schools and nurseries in Mykolaiv

In Mykolaiv, there are plans to purchase 17 sets of inverters with rechargeable batteries for schools and nurseries. They will be installed in shelters, classrooms and premises where autonomous heating systems are in operation.

The City Council’s Department of Education plans to spend 3.8 million hryvnias on this. The purchase will be funded by a grant from UNICEF, NikVesti reports, citing data from the Prozorro public procurement system.

The Education Department explained to NikVesti that the equipment is needed to ensure the institutions can continue operating during power cuts. In particular, the inverters are intended to provide power to shelters, the internet and autonomous heating systems.

The new equipment is planned to be installed in the shelters at Gymnasium №36 and Lyceums Nos. 42 and 55, as well as at Nursery School №112 and Lyceum №53. A further number of sets will be delivered to Nursery Schools Nos. 143 and 148, the Academy of Children’s Creativity, secondary schools Nos. 4, 11, 31, 54, 56 and 57, and lyceums Nos. 34, 38 and 58.

At nursery school No. 148, the inverter will be connected to the autonomous heating system so that, in the event of power cuts, the premises and shelters do not remain without heating.

According to the Department of Education, 43 nurseries and 48 schools currently operating in either face-to-face or blended formats have already been equipped with inverters and batteries. These help to maintain the operation of the shelters and partially ensure internet access during power cuts.

«An alternative power source (inverter and battery) does not meet the basic needs of the entire building of educational establishments. Therefore, the need for such backup sources remains relevant,» they added.

As a reminder, as of early March, 64 schools are operating in Mykolaiv, of which 43 are teaching in-person, 9 in a blended format and 12 remotely.
