Illustrative photo: NikVestiMykolaiv has approved the network of municipal educational institutions for the 2026–2027 academic year. According to the document, there are 63 general secondary schools and 43 nurseries operating in the city.
The decision was backed by members of the Mykolaiv City Council’s executive committee on Wednesday, 14 October, NikVesti reports.
According to Hanna Lychko, head of the Mykolaiv City Council’s Education Department, there are 63 general secondary schools and one special general secondary school in the city, which also has a pre-school section.
In addition, teaching has resumed at 43 pre-school institutions. There are also seven out-of-school education institutions operating in the city.
However, as of 1 September 2026, teaching has been suspended at 27 pre-school institutions and the pre-school section of Primary School №1.
The decision was supported by 13 members of the executive committee. There were no votes against and no abstentions.
It should be noted that in the new academic year, 45 schools in Mykolaiv plan to hold face-to-face lessons, 12 will continue with distance learning, and a further seven will operate in a blended format.
It was previously reported that Lyceums Nos. 51, 53 and 60 in Mykolaiv were unable to enrol two tenth-grade classes each this year. As a result, the city may review the approved network of academic lyceums.
Back in April 2026, the Mykolaiv Department of Education reported that these three institutions might not meet future requirements for academic lyceums due to an insufficient number of pupils in the upper years.
At the time, the head of the Department of Education, Hanna Lychko, explained that from 1 September 2027, every academic lyceum must have at least two parallel classes and three specialisation streams. At that time, there were 22 lyceums in Mykolaiv. The Department of Education also predicted a further decline in the number of Year 9 leavers. Around 47 per cent of pupils progressed to Year 10.
At the end of April, the relevant parliamentary committee approved the draft network of academic lyceums, which is due to come into effect on 1 September 2027.
