On 24 March, the V.V. Vereshchagin Mykolaiv Regional Art Museum welcomed art lovers to the opening of the exhibition «Artists of Mykolaiv Region – Winners of the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine», marking the 65th anniversary of the establishment of this state award in the field of culture.
This was reported by a correspondent for NikVesti.
The exhibition features works from the museum’s collection by People’s Artists of Ukraine Andrii Antoniuk (1943–2023), Mykola Ozernyi (1938–2025), Mykhailo Bozhii (1911–1990), Honoured Artist of Ukraine Viktor Semerniov (b. 1942), and designer-artist Yurii Steshyn (1938–1993). The exhibition also features books by Shevchenko Prize laureate and Honoured Artist of Ukraine Dmytro Kremin. As museum director Serhii Rosliakov explained, the poet’s presence among the artists was no coincidence: he socialised extensively with artists and was friends with Andrii Antoniuk. Artists from Mykolaiv illustrated Dmytro Kremin’s poetry collections, painted his portraits, and he dedicated his poems to them.
In his opening remarks, Serhii Rosliakov spoke about the artists participating in the exhibition. He devoted considerable attention to the history of the Mykolaiv Museum of Shipbuilding and the Fleet, as Mykola Ozernyi, Viktor Semernov and Yurii Steshyn, together with specialists from other fields, received the T.G. Shevchenko Prize for establishing the museum in 1981.
Next to speak was Yevhen Horburov, chair of the regional council’s standing committee on culture. He noted that the Mykolaiv region has a strong artistic community, whose young representatives are continuing the traditions of craftsmanship and have a good chance of winning the prestigious award.
Dmytro Artym, head of the Mykolaiv Regional Organisation of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine, drew the audience’s attention to the little-known illustrations by Andrii Antoniuk for the works of T.G. Shevchenko, M.M. Kotsyubynskyi and other Ukrainian writers. The illustrations were created using the linocut technique.
Also speaking at the opening were: Olena Buberenko, Head of the Department of Culture, Nationalities and Religions of the Mykolaiv Regional State Administration; Yurii Liubarov, Head of the Department of Culture of the Mykolaiv City Council; and Ihor Martsynkovskyi, the originator of the idea and Chairman of the Editorial Board of the ‘Shevchenko Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Mykolaiv Region’.
Anna Tkach and Viktoria Usata, students at the Mykolaiv Vocational College of Culture and Arts, read poems by Dmytro Kremin.
Staff at the V.V. Vereshchagin Art Museum also invite residents of Mykolaiv to visit this and other current exhibitions, as well as the guided tour «The House Where Art Came In: 40 Years on Velyka Morska Street», which will take place on 26 March at 2.00 pm.
