A weigh-in-motion (WIM) system will start operating at the entrance to Mykolaiv on 27 January. It will automatically monitor the weight of trucks travelling on the road without stopping the vehicle.

This was announced during a briefing on 23 January by Oleksandr Antoshchuk, Head of the Infrastructure Restoration and Development Service in Mykolaiv Oblast, according to NikVesti.

The complex is located at 126 + 562 km of the M-14 motorway leading to Odesa. It was installed in August 2024, and all inspection and certification work has now been completed.

«On Monday, the commission is going to the site, and we plan to officially put it into operation on 27 January. We have received all the necessary certificates that allow us to use the complex to obtain official indicators of congestion of vehicles travelling on this road,» said Alexander Antoshchuk.

The complex covers almost 100% of the freight traffic towards the ports of Odesa region. The weighing system will operate on six lanes, providing fast and accurate control.

The general contractor of the project was «EDBK», and the equipment was provided by the Norwegian company Q-FREE HI-TRAC TMU4 WIM. The total cost of the project was 48.4 million hryvnias.

What is WIM?

WIM (Weigh-In-Motion) is a high-tech system that allows for round-the-clock real-time monitoring of truck movements. Special sensors collect information about the total weight of the vehicle, the load on each axle, the number of axles, overall dimensions and number plates. In case of violation of the weight and dimensions standards, the system automatically transmits the data to the State Service of Ukraine for Transport Safety, which allows for prompt fines to be imposed.

In addition, on the same section of the road, repairs to the road junction at the intersection of M-14 and T-15-06, which began in 2021, have been completed.

The work on the interchange lasted several years and included the restoration of an 89.6-metre-long bridge and the repair of a 3.1 kilometre-long section of road. In August 2023, the works resumed, and in September of the same year, traffic on this section of the road was opened.

The Mykolaiv Region Restoration Service will spend 722 million hryvnias on road maintenance from 2024 to 2027.
