ELU Avtodorig explained why asphalting work is not carried out at night in Mykolaiv. Among the reasons are the curfew, the specific nature of pothole repairs and additional labour costs.

This was explained by the company’s director, Vitalii Shevchenko, during a live broadcast, according to NikVesti.

According to him, road works at night are complicated by the curfew, as the process involves not only workers who are directly on the road.

«For people to go out and work on the road network, it’s not just the workers who go out onto the roads themselves. There’s also the garage, the asphalt plant, and the people who heat up and prepare the emulsion and bitumen. You see less than half of the people involved in this process,» he explained.

Vitalii Shevchenko also noted that pothole repairs are more effectively carried out during the day, when defects in the road surface are more clearly visible.

«For pothole repairs, it is important to be able to see unevenness, cracks and bulges in daylight,» said the company director.

He also emphasised that night shifts entail additional costs, as work at this time is paid at a higher rate.

«Workers have to be paid twice as much at night. So this isn’t an option for us at the moment,» he added.

It should be noted that the mayor, Oleksandr Sienkevych, had previously stated that only 20 million hryvnias had been allocated for pothole repairs for the whole year. He explained that deep potholes had appeared on the roads after the winter due to freeze-thaw cycles and the use of de-icing agents.
