An open streetball tournament took place on Soborna Street on 20 June, bringing together 22 teams.
This was reported by a correspondent for NikVesti.
Mykola Dmytriev, a member of the Mykolaiv Regional Basketball Federation and the tournament organiser, explained that the event was organised on the initiative of the city’s Central District administration to promote sport among young people and encourage residents to lead an active lifestyle.
«They approached me with a proposal to hold an entertaining sporting event for young people, to encourage as many people as possible to take up sport. To do this, we brought basketball hoops here from «Nadiia» and organised a streetball tournament right in the centre of our city,» he said.
According to the organiser, this year’s competition has been the city’s biggest in the last decade.
«As far as I can remember, this is probably the biggest tournament in the last 10 years, despite the state of war in the country. Twenty-two teams have gathered here today. By way of comparison, in 2021, before the full-scale war began, 21 teams took part in the tournament. As far as I’m concerned, this is a real sensation for Mykolaiv,» said Mykola Dmytriev.
He also announced that new basketball competitions are planned for the near future.
«There will be more tournaments like this this year. We plan to organise regional competitions, involving young people, athletes and anyone else interested from other cities. Most likely, closer to August, we’ll be holding qualifying rounds in various towns across the Mykolaiv region, and then, together with the regional federation and the regional sports department, we plan to organise a large-scale tournament at the Yacht Club,» he added.
During the opening ceremony, the participants were welcomed by the Mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Sienkevych. He wished the athletes victory and urged young people to devote more time to sport.
«Taking part is for wimps. I wish you all victory. But if you don’t win today, it means only one thing — you need to train harder and more,» the mayor told the participants.
Sienkevych also thanked the basketball players for setting an example to their peers.
«You are a fine example to other young people who spend their time on TikTok, vaping and getting up to all sorts of nonsense that doesn’t require much brainpower. If you’re making TikTok videos, make them today, and promote a healthy lifestyle, because Mykolaiv should be a city of young, beautiful, athletic people,» the mayor emphasised.
Earlier, the Mykolaiv team SDYUSSHOR-4 won the Kirovohrad Region Open Basketball Championship.
