The Department of Culture of the Mykolaiv City Council is currently working on the development of regulations for holding a contest to change the city's coat of arms.

During the briefing, the head of the culture department of the Mykolaiv City Council, Yurii Liubarov, told about it, NikVesti writes.

According to the official, there are modern heraldry rules in Ukraine, according to which a new coat of arms of Mykolaiv should be developed in the city. Currently, the administration is working on the development of regulations for the competition.

«This is not only an idea, but also a necessity, since today we understand that there are rules for the coats of arms of the Russian Empire, as well as rules for the coats of arms of modern Ukraine. Therefore, we have to change some details or the coat of arms in general, this will be decided during the public discussion,» explained Yurii Liubarov.

After the approval of the provisions of the competition at the session of the city council, artists and artists will have the opportunity to submit their proposals for the new coat of arms of the city. An important point is the intention to hold the competition without additional costs from the budget.

«I hope that it will be without expenses from the budget. We will organize an open competition for a new coat of arms of Mykolaiv, and artists will have the opportunity to present their creative proposals at the session of the city council,» added Yurii Liubarov.

Approval of the provision and further competition are expected in the near future.

Will the coat of arms be changed in Mykolaiv and the celebration of City Day postponed?

In September, the mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych proposed to change the appearance of Mykolaiv's coat of arms.

The mayor then explained that the galleys with oars depicted on the coat of arms are a symbol of slave ideology, which must be changed during Ukraine's struggle for freedom: «The thing is that it depicts a galley with oars. Without sails. I think you all understand what such a galley means, who worked on it to death. We are not rowing slaves, not slaves. We absolutely do not need such symbols in the identity of our city!».

To replace the coat of arms, Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych announced a contest with a prize fund of 200,000 hryvnias for the best proposed version of the sketch.

In addition, the leader of Mykolaiv proposes to postpone the date of the City Day celebration. Usually this holiday is celebrated on the second Saturday of September, but now the idea of celebrating it on May 22, on the Day of Summer Nicholas, is being discussed.

This decision can also, according to the authorities, become a symbol of the deprivation of «imperialism», because Mykolaiv was founded by decree of the Russian empress Catherine II.
