This year, 54 journalists were killed in the world, 31 — in zones of military conflicts. This is stated in the Reporters Without Borders report.

Gaza stands out as the most dangerous region in the world, where the highest number of journalists have been killed in connection with their professional activities in the last five years.

At the same time, according to IMI, since the beginning of the full-scale war in the Russian Federation, 91 journalists have been killed, and 329 media have stopped their work.

Director General of RSF Thibaut Brutten dedicated this report to Ukrainian journalist Viktoria Roshchyna. It became known about her death in Russian captivity on October 10 of this year.

It is noted that until the publication of the report, the Russian authorities did not provide any explanations regarding the circumstances of the journalist's death and did not return her body.

«Informing is not a crime, but killing someone to silence them is,» he said.

In 2024, 550 media workers were detained in the world, in particular in Russia (+8) and Israel (+17). China, Myanmar, Israel and Belarus are the countries where the most journalists are detained.

Almost 100 journalists are still missing in 34 countries. More than a quarter of these journalists have disappeared over the past 10 years.

«Journalists don't die, they are killed; they are not in prison, they are thrown there by the regimes; they do not disappear, they are stolen. These crimes, often organized by governments or armed groups, violate international law and too often go unpunished. We must change the course of events, remind ourselves, the citizens, that journalists die precisely for us, to inform us. To protect those who inform us is to protect the truth,» Thibaut Brutten is confident.
